20/09/2017: NUTRION International: Fats, fatty acids and sustainability

Dr Alfredo J. Escribano, expert in livestock sustainability, participated as an invited speaker at AGROFUTURO, September 12, 2017. The event is considered by some as the most important academic and business orientated event in Colombia's agricultural sector.

Dr Escribano is responsible for Business Development at NUTRION Internacional, the leading manufacturer of bypass fats and fatty acids. The company has focused throughout its history on the development of nutritional solutions based on fats and fatty acids. On this the company says, "Which has allowed us to reach a high level of expertise, both scientifically and at the farm level; the combination needed to bring value to the sector: innovation plus understanding of needs equals useful and tailor-made solutions."

Dr Escribano provided an applied vision on the concept of sustainability in livestock and it's evaluation, and presented future livestock technologies and designs, paying special attention to the application of ICTs and precision feedings.

He commented, "ICT's are already part of the day-to-day, and precision must be in our companies' DNA. In this sense, precision begins with determining the animal's needs not only on a physiological basis, but also taking into account a farm's specific context - i.e. the slop and altitude in some Columbian farms."

NUTRION Internacional provided the latest scientific research showing the great potential of fatty acids. In the words of Dr Escribano, "Fatty acids are more than a source of energy, they are elements with specific functions at the metabolic, immune and reproductive levels among other aspects, which ultimately lead to greater sustainability of livestock production, less methane production, less use of resources/food produced and less use of antibiotics."

As his presentation reads, "a fatty acid, a function", this philosophy is reflected in both NUTRION's nutritional solutions, whose formulation is on fatty acids basis  (Omega-3, Medium Chain Fatty Acids, and others) and its fat origin: palm, flax, rapeseed, maize, soy, fish, etc.

NUTRION ended its participation reminding that "sustainability is everybody's duty, a lighthouse, and a goal; and fatty acids are useful tools in the battle" and calling to action "Together, we can do it!"
