21/03/2017: Milling industry professionals participate in expert milling course

IGP Institute partnered with Buhler, Inc. to offer milling training for experienced millers

The IGP Institute at Kansas State University strives to provide valuable training opportunities for grain industry professionals.

The Buhler–KSU Expert Milling was held at the institute’s conference centre in Manhattan, Kansas March 6 - 10, 2017.

This specialised training course gave participants a theoretical and practical understanding of advanced milling principles.

Several topics across the milling industry were covered including wheat tempering, cleaning systems, the perfect break release, purifier techniques, roller mills, sifters and mill pneumatics.

Course participant, Chris Craft, head miller at Grain Craft in Birmingham, Alabama, describes his experience at the Buhler–KSU Expert Milling course and the valuable knowledge that he gained throughout the course.

“I wanted to advance my knowledge and try to advance in the field where I can look at more detailed operations in the industry,” says Mr Craft.

“Being someone who didn’t go to school for milling, this course was kept light, but also very serious, and I was able to ask questions about my own mill and setup and get some insight from the instructors and really gave me some ideas and direction to make improvements when I go back.”

The educational training also gave participants an in-depth perspective of flow sheet diagrams and milling processes, optimum machine adjustment and mill handling and provided them the experience of learning about the operations of the KSU Hal Ross Flour Mill.

“This milling course was great with all of the participants being knowledgeable and experienced,” says Jason Watt, Buhler instructor of milling and course coordinator.

“They were very active in the discussions, which made the course fun and very lively, as they learned both from the instructor and from each other.”

The IGP Institute offers several other training courses in addition to flour milling and grain processing.

The institute holds other trainings in feed manufacturing and grain quality management, and grain marketing and risk management.
